It's Really Happening

Don't you hate it when you get home from work and someone's torn up your yard and dug a big trench through it?

Not us.

Aren't you glad you're looking at a picture of a trench for a new sewer line?

After we signed off on the designs, it seemed like it took FOREVER for the plans to go to all of the engineers and for the city to issue a permit. (Real time? Five weeks. Slightly less than forever.)

Then we had a kickoff meeting, and the next morning all of the contractors came over to walk the property. Jules and Mommalinda stayed inside (it was pretty early) but I was out there, taking pictures and asking questions.

Matt in the background, then Billy, Dale, Ed, and Sharzad

Juan and Billy, Billy and Ed. Yeah, Billy is in EVERY PICTURE. I suspect vanity.

You could tell this crew has worked together for a long time and I loved listening to them problem-solve. Little things, like the electrician musing, "Maybe we should put a subpanel on the addition. Save us some time wiring." (Yes, please!) and the plumber saying in disbelief, "Are you sure you don't want a tankless water heater back here?" We talked it over and realized that with our 1/2" pipes and the existing water heater all the way in the garage, it would take a really, really long time for momma to get hot water. Tankless it is!

And then demo didn't start for another nine days! And it was torture. We were like, "When's it going to happen? Is it going to happen?"

What's funny is that Sharzad told us several times, "It's going to seem like it's taking forever. Don't worry. It's going to happen on schedule." and Jules and I were like, "Pshaw. We're not going to worry about stuff like that. (Jules would like it to be known that she absolutely did not say "pshaw".)

We totally worried about stuff like that. We'd wake up every morning, "Are they here? Are they starting? When are they going to start?"

And then yesterday, boy did they start! This is what the yard looked like last night:

I got home today and saw this. I'm going to take a guess at what's happening here. I think that the trench is where the footings go and then the foundation goes on top of the footings and across all the dirt and up those wood pieces. But I'm not an expert. It's entirely possible that I'm making it all up out of random bits of information I've collected over the years.

The one thing Jules and I keep saying? Oh my god, it's HUGE. It seems SO HUGE. I mean, we are adding 600 square feet, but you guys - this thing is HUGE. It's really different going from the plan on paper to 3-D, large as life, right out the back door, actual honest-to-golly construction. (Jules would like it to be known that she absolutely, positively, did not say "honest-to-golly")

Okay, a moment of truth here. Seeing how much of our yard is going away was a bit of a shock for me. If you've been reading along, you're probably thinking, "But Kelly Marie. Your yard was a disaster. It was clearly too much for you." And you would be right. So I'm going to take just a moment to mourn, and then I'm going to get super excited again. And do silly things like take a picture of my shoes in the space where our new laundry room will soon be.

It's really happening.
